The Dolphins is a Malayalam movie written and directed by Arun Kumar Aravind. It stars Jayaram, Bhavana and Padmapriya and also features Shanthi Krishna in a cameo role. Padmapriya who played Kaveri in the Tamil movie Vishwaroopam has replaced Esha Deol in this movie. The film was shot in 3 years which is three times more than the regular duration to complete such projects. Jayaram will be seen as an NRI dentist who tries hard to get his son accepted into the MIT while facing many hurdles along the way due to visa issues faced by Indians living overseas. Padmapriya has been roped in to play a role based on a real person, former Microsoft employee and engineer Nerys Watkins.The Dolphins is one of the most expensive movie in Malayalam film history. It was shot in 3 years and was completed 4 months before release date. The film released worldwide on 1 April 2015 except for Tamil Nadu and Kerala where it released on 2 April 2015; while the 3 major regions of India saw its complete screening on 5 May 2015, two days after its official worldwide release date. It opened at 45th place at the box office . The worldwide gross came up to 775 million (US$9 million). The Movie got mixed reviews from critics. The movie received mostly positive reviews from the critics. "Rediff.com" rated it 3 out of 5 saying, "The theme of the film is intelligent, and so is the screenplay which manages to maintain the flow of a story with some riveting moments." Shankar Vellagiri gave 3/5 stars saying, "Aravind has done very well for this film boosted by his directorial prowess and sure-to-be phenomenal music. The cast has their share of good performances also. " "The Times of India" gave 3 stars out of 5 and wrote, "The movie struggles to hold your attention despite the best efforts of Jayaram." Sify.com also rated it 3/5 and wrote, "The Dolphins’ script is a bit long and runs for nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes. There were certain scenes and sequences that could have been dropped out to make the pace of the film move faster. The songs too are not something that grab your attention with the writing on them. The songs are good, but could have been better with some fine-tuning." "The Hindu" rated it 2.5/5 and said, "But for its songs and performances, The Dolphins would be an average film." Paresh C Palicha of "Rediff.com" gave 2/5 stars and concluded by saying, "The Dolphins is let down by its weak screenplay. There is nothing new about it."
